Week 4 - Conclusion

Week 4
This was my most content heavy week. Following last weeks build i was first task with creating a moving platform. I used an island as planned in the map and used a level sequence to animate the island moving back and forth. I looped the animation and it worked perfectly. I repeated the process for the moving platforms too. Overall it was progressing smoothly and i created the second floor without trouble. The keys and locked doors were not a hassle - i also added coins to direct the player to the island key. There were two road blocks which i worried about. The smaller block was adding a ceiling to the map. I wanted to add a quick ceiling and use the floor tiles however it would block the players jump. I decided to use the provided ceiling as it added height to not hinder the jump of the player. This also added a nice lighting to the map. The teleporters were the hardest part of the level. I nearly scrapped the idea for a tunnel back to the 2nd floor however the jump height powerup would allow players to skip the final jump using the tunnel. After using blueprints i managed to create a hitbox which would send the player back to the 2nd floor. I placed it underneath the final key so that players won't miss it. This concluded the final design of the map. I learnt a lot about the placement of items and in the future i need to keep in mind the size and distance of objects as some jumps felt off. Also i should have a pause before moving platforms began their animation again as the momentum would send the player moving in a frustrating way. I'm glad i created the teleporter as it worked great.
